Akana earned his BS in Aerospace Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1981. He went on to receive his MS in Space Systems from Naval Postgraduate School in 1991. He also received an MA in Secondary Education from UOPH. Akana is currently employed as a teacher.
