O'Neill did not running for re-election to the New Mexico House of Representatives in 2012. Instead, he ran for election to the seat currently occupied by retiring Senator Dede Feldman in the State Senate.[1][2]
O'Neill won the Democratic primary election for State Senate District 13 on June 5, 2012. He defeated Carlos S. Cordova, Chris S. Catechis, and Laura Sanchez. He was unchallenged in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[3][4]
