William R. Smith was the 2012
Democratic candidate who sought election to the
U.S. House representing
the 2nd Congressional District of
Ohio.
[1]
Smith's primary victory over his well-known challenger came as a shock. He was even dubbed the "invisible candidate" because of his lack of campaign presence. Smith won by 59 votes out of nearly 20,000 cast.[2]

Smith was defeated by republican Brad Wenstrup.[3] Smith defeated David Krikorian in the Democratic primary 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing Ohio's 2nd District.
The Washington Post listed the House of Representatives elections in Ohio in 2012 as one of the states that could determine whether Democrats retake the House or Republican holds its majority in 2013.[4] Ohio tied with Pennsylvania for 9th on the list.[4]

After Smith's victory, it was revealed that the "Victory Ohio Super PAC" blitzed voters in the 2nd district with pro-Smith robocalls. The activity may have violated election law, however, because the group did not register with the Federal Election Commission, or reveal campaign donors or spending.[5]
Campaign donors
As of October 4, 2012, Smith did not have any contribution reports on file with the Federal Election Commission
