Wampler received a B.A. in Political Science at University of Tennessee. He also served as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and is now retired. Wampler is a member of the Central Presbyterian Church.
Wampler announced on June 5, 2011 that he would not seek re-election in the 2011 general election. He said he was not aiming for another government position, but was instead looking forward to returning to being a "private citizen."[1]
