A new method of providing donor information was created in March 2013. This component has two parts: a comprehensive overview and yearly breakdowns.

Comprehensive overview

Copy the following code and complete using the donor information from Follow the Money

{{Comprehensive donor history
|Name=
|Full name=
|year=
|Editdate=
|link=
|party=
|totalraised2012=
|result2012=
|office2012=
|totalraised2010=
|result2010=
|office2010=
|totalraised2008=
|result2008=
|office2008=
|totalraised2006=
|result2006=
|office2006=
|totalraised2004=
|result2004=
|office2004=
}}

Tips:

  • |name= Should be the candidate's last name.
  • |year= Will be the oldest year data is available for the individual
  • |Editdate= Is the date you are editing the information in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • |link = Should be in the following format: <ref>[URL ''followthemoney.org'', "TITLE," accessed MONTH DATE, YEAR]</ref>. Link the candidate's career summary.
  • |resultXXXX= Can either be Won (if the candidate won), Lost (if the candidate lost), or N/A (if the candidate was not up for election)
  • |officeXXX= Should link back to that year's list of elections, when possible. Example: [[Alaska House of Representatives elections, 2012|Alaska State House, District 1]]

Yearly breakdown

For any year that a candidate raised $0, do not include a yearly breakdown. Each year should have its own subsection of the Campaign donors section. Copy the following code and complete using the donor information from Follow the Money

{{SLP donor box YEAR
|name =
|full Name =
|reference =
|office=
|new =
|party =
|total raised =
|org1 =
|org2 =
|org3 =
|org4 =
|org5 =
|orgamount1 =
|orgamount2 =
|orgamount3 =
|orgamount4 =
|orgamount5 =
|}}

Tips:

  • |name = Should be the candidate's last name.
  • |new = Can either be "yes" (if new to the chamber), "no" (if not new to the chamber), or "off" (if the candidate was not up for election)
  • |reference = Will be just a link to the yearly summary on Follow the Money for that candidate

Research

Follow The Money is an excellent source of information how these questions related to campaign finance:

  • How much did a particular legislator raise in a given election cycle?
  • The names of his/her contributors
  • Total spending on a particular election (for example, what was the total spent in an election contest for the 3rd State Senate District in Utah in 2006?)
  • Total spending on a set of elections (for example, how much total money was spent on all campaigns for the position of Utah State Senator in 2008?)

If you need help figuring out how best to navigate FTM's website, ask someone who might be able to help.
