Contents

This page is a content-and-style guide about how to write sections about donors to the campaigns of incumbent state legislators and candidates for state legislature.

In your article, you can give the reader overview statistics about campaign finance, as in this example, where the reader learns, "Davis raised $81,439 on his campaign, while Oliver raised $58,781." That information should go in the "Election history" section of the article.

You may also wish to include a section that identifies specific donors. Here's an example.

The title of this section should be "Campaign donors".

In the example used below, the chart provides information about a legislator's four top donors in a particular election year.

A new donor box {{state leg donor}} was developed in October 2011.

Usage

Copy the following code and complete using the donor information from Follow the Money

{{slp donor box YEAR
|Chamber =
|party =
|total raised =
|org1 =
|org2 =
|org3 =
|org4 =
|org5 =
|orgdonor1 =
|orgdonor2 =
|orgdonor3 =
|orgdonor4 =
|orgdonor5 =
|}}

For example:

{{slp donor box 2010
|Chamber = Arkansas House of Representatives
|party = Democratic
|total raised = $46,306
|org1 = [[Arkansas Health Care Association]]
|org2 = McDaniel Leadership PAC
|org3 = GlaxoSmithKline
|org4 = [[Stephens Group]]
|org5 = ''Unreadable''
|orgdonor1 = $4,000
|orgdonor2 = $1,000
|orgdonor3 = $1,000
|orgdonor4 = $1,000
|orgdonor5 = $1,000
|}}

Research

Follow The Money is an excellent source of information how these questions related to campaign finance:

  • How much did a particular legislator raise in a given election cycle?
  • The names of his/her contributors
  • Total spending on a particular election (for example, what was the total spent in an election contest for the 3rd State Senate District in Utah in 2006?)
  • Total spending on a set of elections (for example, how much total money was spent on all campaigns for the position of Utah State Senator in 2008?)
