Candidates
Categories are one of the most important and complex components of a candidate's page. Not only do we need to capture a lot of information in the categories, but the status of candidates changes quickly as candidates withdraw from races, lose in the primary elections, et cetera. For each candidate or incumbent running for office, there are three components we need to add - two categories and one template. The template will, in turn, add several categories to each page.
Categories:
- State
- For example: Category:Delaware
- Political Party
- For example: Category:Republican Party
Template: {{Seocandidate}}
{{Seocandidate|Year=|Status=|Office=|Primary=|General=|Unopposedprimary=|Open=|New office=}}
Example
In 2011, Bobby Jindal was the incumbent Governor of Louisiana. He ran for re-election and won. The following template and categories were added to his page:
{{Seocandidate|Year=2011|Status=incumbent|Office=Gubernatorial|Primary=Y|General=W|Open=|New office=}}
There are a few special cases for candidates who never official file their candidacy, withdraw from races, or are disqualified from the ballot.
If a candidate withdraws from the race before the state's candidate filing deadline passes:
- Remove {{Seocandidate}}
- Keep the State and Party categories
If a candidate withdraws from the race after the state's filing deadline:
- Keep {{seocandidate}}
- Keep the State and Party categories
- Add the appropriate sub-category from this category: Category:Candidate removed from ballot, 2012
If a candidate filed for office but is disqualified from the ballot:
- Keep {{seocandidate}}
- Keep the State and Party categories
- Add the appropriate sub-category from this category: Category:Candidate removed from ballot, 2012
- For example, Jim Wallace filed for Governor of Indiana in 2012 but was disqualified due to insufficient signatures. The categories on his page are:
[[Category:Republican Party]]
[[Category:Indiana]]
{{Seocandidate|Year=2012|Status=challenger|Office=Gubernatorial|Primary=|General=|Open=|New office=}}
[[Category:Gubernatorial candidate (Disqualified), 2012]]
