This writing guide explains how to craft a "References" section for a local ballot measure article.

References

See also: Help:Footnotes & Help:Citation conventions

To keep the reliability of Ballotpedia high, all information should be referenced through inserting linked footnotes through out the article. References are added in between the opening and closing "ref" command thus: <ref>[*reference*]</ref>. See this page for general help related to footnotes and this page for Ballotpedia's guidelines and policies with regard to references.

References will not show up on the page unless you add the "reflist" template. This template is added in the "References" section, which is always the last section in any local ballot measure article.

Using the <ref name=NAME>*reference*</ref> command can be useful for sources that will cited many times throughout an article. Once this reference is added, it can be used later by referring to the arbitrary ref name used. The easiest way to learn this method is by looking at an example.

Horizontal templates and categories are also included in the "References" section under the "reflist" template.

Installation

The following "installation code" should included in the article immediately after the text for which the footnote is a reference.

For the first instance of any one reference, use:

<ref name=NAME>[URL ''WEBSITE NAME'', "ARTICLE/DOCUMENT/VIDEO NAME," DATE PUBLISHED/ACCESSED]</ref>

For following instances of the same reference, simply use:

<ref name=NAME/>

The "installation code" for the actual "References" section is below:

==References==
{{reflist}}
{{STATE counties}}
{{STATE}}
[[Category:STATE YEAR local ballot measures]][[Category:Local TOPIC, STATE, YEAR]]

Examples

This code:

... running a campaign in opposition to this initiative.<ref name=Against>[https://web.archive.org/web/2/http://www.energyindependenceca.com/la-habra-heights/ ''La Habra Citizens Against the Energy Ban'' website, "Home," accessed November 17, 2014]</ref>

"...in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside."<ref name=Dangers>[http://www.dangersoffracking.com/ ''Dangers of Fracking website'', "Home," accessed April 10, 2015]</ref>

...the wrong direction to take the city because increased energy industry operation could make the city more prosperous.<ref name=Against/>

"...complete each fracturing job."<ref name=Dangers/>

results in the following rendering, provided the "reflist" template is included at the bottom of the page:

... running a campaign in opposition to this initiative.[1]

"...in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside."[2]

...the wrong direction to take the city because increased energy industry operation could make the city more prosperous.[1]

"...complete each fracturing job."[2]

And the following code to create the "References" section:

==References==
{{reflist}}

results in the following rendering:
