|Profession||Activist, Secretary of State's Aide|
Thompson works as Deputy Chief of Staff to Alabama Secretary of State Beth Chapman. Prior to this, Thompson worked as a senior aide in the Alabama State Auditor’s Office. He also co-chairs the Capital City Young Republicans, and chairs the Young Republican Federation of Alabama Congressional District 3. He is on the Montgomery County and State Republican Executive Committees. Thompson served as an Alternate Delegate to the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.
Thompson is an officer in the Pike Road Lions Club. He has also volunteered with the American Cancer Society, the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and Support Our Soliders.
The seat will be open as current Auditor Samantha Shaw (R) is term-limited and unable to seek re-election.
One of Thompson's opponents, Ray Bryan, announced early in his campaign an intention to have the office of State Auditor abolished via constitutional amendment, and to have its duties absorbed by other parts of the state government, such as Examiners of Public Accounts. He claimed this proposal fit with recent legislative efforts to consolidate the state government. A spokesman for Senator Del Marsh, who was involved in some of these efforts, stated that Senate's reorganization efforts had focused on departments with larger budgets and did not include plans for abolishing the office. Thompson opposed Bryan’s plan on the basis that the State Auditor is an elected position and the Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts is a legislative agency. He stated that, "The Examiners of Public Accounts is a legislative agency and answers to the Legislature. The auditor is independently elected and answers to the people.” The Alabama Chief Examiner, who heads the Examiners of Public Accounts, is a legislatively appointed position.
Thompson was born in Dothan, Alabama, lived on a Dale County farm and later moved to Montgomery. He currently lives in Pike Road, Alabama with his wife Rebecca.
