Ako Abdul-Samad is a Democratic member of the Iowa House of Representatives, representing the 66th District since 2007. He currently serves as an Assistant Minority Leader and previously served as an Assistant Majority Leader.

Abdul-Samad is the author of "A Deeper Truth, Revelations of the Soul." He has been Chief Executive Officer/Founder of Creative Visions Human Development Center, Vice President of KUCB Radio, Writer/Co-Producer of Teen Talk, Writer/Producer/Director of Understanding Islam, and a photographer.

Abdul-Samad is a member of the Black Panther Party - Des Moines Chapter, Vice President of the Center for the Study and Application of Black Economic Development of the International Civil Rights Solidarity Movement, Founder/President of the National African-American Islamic Association, and Co-Founder/Coordinator of the Young Men's Christian Association Downtown Teen Program.[1]

Abdul-Samad won re-election to the 66th District Seat in 2010 with no opposition. In the June 8th primary election, Abdul-Samad defeated Democratic primary opponent Clair E. Rudison, Jr. by a margin of 912 to 306. The general election took place on November 2, 2010.[2]
