The Alabama secretary of state election will take place on November 4, 2014. Incumbent Jim Bennett (R) was appointed secretary of state to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of previous officeholder Beth Chapman. Chapman was first elected in 2006 and, due to term limits, would have been ineligible to seek re-election in 2014 even if she had remained in office through to her term end date. Per the terms of his appointment, Bennett is not running for a full term in 2014, therefore the seat will still be open.

Alabama is one of 14 states that uses an open primary system, in which registered voters do not have to be members of a party to vote in that party's primary.[1][2][3]
