An Alameda County Permanent Doubling of the Transportation Sales Tax, Measure B1 ballot question was on the November 6, 2012 ballot for voters in Alameda County, where it was narrowly defeated.[1]

If Measure B1 had been approved, it would have permanently doubled the transportation sales tax paid in the county from half-a-cent to one full cent. Proceeds from this tax are targeted within the county to keep the roads in good repair.

A 2/3rds supermajority vote was required for approval, because in California, when a local sales tax measure is earmarked for a specific purpose (as is the case with Measure B1), it requires a higher threshold for approval than local sales tax measures that are not earmarked for specific purposes.

The question on the ballot:

MEASURE B1: "Shall a new Transportation Expenditure Plan be implemented to address current and future transportation needs that:
  • Improves transit access to jobs and schools;
  • Fixes roads, improves highways and increases bicycle and pedestrian safety;
  • Reduces traffic congestion and improves air quality;
  • Keeps senior, youth, and disabled fares affordable.

Approval extends the existing County sales tax and increases it by 1/2 cent, with independent oversight, local job creation programs. No money can be taken by the state.[2]
