Alameda County Transportation Sales Tax Increase, Measure B1 (November 2012)
If Measure B1 had been approved, it would have permanently doubled the transportation sales tax paid in the county from half-a-cent to one full cent. Proceeds from this tax are targeted within the county to keep the roads in good repair.
A two-thirds supermajority vote was required for approval, because in California, when a local sales tax measure is earmarked for a specific purpose (as was the case with Measure B1), it requires a higher threshold for approval than local sales tax measures that are not earmarked for specific purposes.
