The Alaska Gambling Initiative or HJR 2 is a legislative referral that would enact a constitutional amendment to demand a public vote before any gambling for profit can be legalized in Alaska on a statewide or community basis.

Support

The bill was sponsored by Judiciary Chairman Hollis French. The state House voted in favor of the bill 33-6 two weeks before the end of the legislative session.[1]

Other legislative support of the bill includes Rep. Harry Crawford, D-Anchorage; Rep. Nancy Dahlstrom, R-Eagle River. Bother have been involved in previous measures to restrict the expansion of gambling.

Opposition

The bar and restaurant industry trade group, CHARR, who sponsored the Gaming Commission initiative are against the legislation. Darwin Biwer, one of the initiative's backers believes the legislation is trying to thwart the will of the people.
