Alaska state government salary data is maintained by the Alaska Department of Administration, Finance Division. In July 2011, the Alaska Policy Forum posted a database with salary information for every state employee.[1][2]

According to 2008 U.S. Census data, the state of Alaska and local governments in the state employed a total of 62,644 people. Of those employees, 48,124 were full-time employees receiving net wages of $224,039,245 per month and 14,520 were part-time employees paid $15,701,767 per month. More than 50% of those employees, or 31,622 employees, were in education or higher education.[3]

The total number of state and local government employees was up slightly from the 61,483 employees of state and local government according to 2007 U.S. Census data. Most state employees work a 37.5 hour work week, with standard hours of 8:00 am—4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Some police officers in Alaska receive over six figures for their work.[4][5][6]

As of 2012, Alaska state legislators earned $50,400 per year. Legislators also received a per diem of $238 or $253 per day, tied to the federal rate. Those located within the capital area received 75% of the federal rate.[7][8]

As of 2008, the salary of Alaska's governor ranked 27th among U.S. governors' salaries. The average salary earned by U.S. governors in 2008 was $128,735. The median salary earned by U.S. governors was $129,962.[11]

As of 2010, the salary of Alaska's chief justice ranked 9th among U.S. chief justices' salaries. The average salary earned by U.S. chief justices was $155,230. The median salary earned by U.S. chief justices was $151,284.[13]

Alaska allows each school district to bargain with its teachers to establish a compensation package. Districts typically set a pay scale with years of experience and education levels combining to determine each teacher's salary.

Full-time and part-time employees of the Department of Education and Early Development and the Department of Labor and Workforce Development whose positions require they hold a valid Alaska Teaching Certificate are required to be members of TRS. TRS benefits are paid from the Teachers' Retirement Fund, which consists of employee and employer contributions and investment earnings.
