Talabi grew in the Eastside of Detroit with her large family of eight brothers and sisters. She served as a Detroit City Council member from 1993-2009 and as the Wayne County Commissioner from 1987-1990. She is the founder of Mack Alive, the Coalition Against Billboard Advertising of Alcohol and Tobacco, and the Partnership for a Drug Free Detroit.[2]
