Lopez's professional experience includes working as a partner at Alcalde & Fay, director at Congressional and Federal Affairs for the Commonwealth of Virginia, assistant administrator for U.S. Small Business Administration, senior legislative assistant for a U.S. Democratic Senator, and staff for the White House Council on Environment Quality.
Lopez earned his B.A. from Vassar College and his J.D. in environmental law from Tulane University in 1995.
On November 8, 2011, Lopez won election to District 49 of the Virginia House of Delegates. He defeated Stephanie Clifford in the primary on August 23, 2011. Lopez faced no opposition in the general election which took place on November 8, 2011.
