Alfredo Montoya was a 2012 Democratic candidate for District 5 of the New Mexico State Senate. He currently serves as a county commissioner in the 2nd District of Rio Arriba County.[1]

Montoya is dean of student services as well as director of financial aid at Northern New Mexico College. He earned his B.A. and M.S.W. from Northern New Mexico Highlands University.[2]


Montoya told the Albuquerque Journal in 2012: "My priorities are jobs and economic development, health care, education and agricultural policy."[3]

On his campaign website, he also listed tribal sovereignty and veterans' affairs as themes of his platform.[4]

Montoya ran in the 2012 election for New Mexico State Senate District 5. He ran and lost against incumbent Richard Martinez in the Democratic primary on June 5, 2012. No Republicans filed in the district. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[5]

Personal life

Montoya has been married to his wife Mae for 35 years, with two sons, a daughter, and four grandchildren.[2]
