Two Alpena County Senior Services Levy Renewal measures were on the August 3, 2010 ballot in Alpena County.

Both measures were approved

The first measure sought to renew the current senior services levy which is set at a rate of $.53 per $1,000 of assessed value for a further four years in order to provide activities and services for seniors in the county.

The second measure sought to restore the previous senior service levy, so would add $.01 per$1,000 of assessed property value to the current levy for a further four years in order to pay for activities and services for seniors in the county.[1]

Question 1:

The question on the ballot:

Shall the limitations on the amount of taxes which shall be assessed against all property both real and personal in Alpena County, Michigan be renewed as provided in Section 6, Article IX of the Michigan Constitution, and the Alpena County Board of Commissioners be authorized to levy a tax not to exceed 0.5394 of one (1) mill ($0.5394 on each $1,000.00 of Equalized State Taxable Value) for a period of four (4) years starting with the levy made December 1, 2010 for the sole purpose of providing “Activities and Services” for Older Persons (individuals 60 years of age or older) for social, legal, health, housing, educational, emotional, nutritional, recreational and mobility services and senior service facility improvements?

(The estimate of the revenue the county of Alpena will collect if the millage is approved and levied in the first year (2010) is $521,535).[3]

Question 2:

The question on the ballot:

In order to restore the full amount of the 0.55 of one (1) mill, which was levied in 2006 through 2009 and expires in 2010, shall the limitations on the amount of taxes which shall be assessed against all property both real and personal in Alpena County, Michigan be increased as provided in Section 6, Article IX of the Michigan Constitution, and the Alpena County Board of Commissioners be authorized to levy a tax not to exceed 0.0106 of one (1) mill ($0.0106 on each $1,000.00 of Equalized State Taxable Value) for a period of four (4) years starting with the levy made December 1, 2010 for the sole purpose of providing “Activities and Services” for Older Persons (individuals 60 years of age or older) for social, legal, health, housing, educational, emotional, nutritional, recreational and mobility services and senior service facility improvements?

(The estimate of the revenue the county of Alpena will collect if the millage is approved and levied in the first year (2010) is $10,249).[3]
