American Majority is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides training to people who want to learn how to campaign for public office, or become community activists. While the organization is non-partisan, it holds to limited government and free market principles, and seeks people from all political parties that hold to the same ideals. American Majority’s main objective is to “build a national network of leaders and grassroots advocates who aspire to increase freedom for individuals, families, the marketplace, and our nation.”[1]

The organization was founded in 2008 and is headquartered in Purcellville, Virginia. The organization is currently led by Ned Ryun, who serves as its President. It also has offices in several states.

American Majority's website states it's mission as "Training and equipping a national network of conservative leadership committed to helping America remain a strong and free nation through limited government, individual freedom and the free market system". It gives examples of these principles, such as strengthened property rights, educational freedom for individuals, reduced corporate taxes and decreased government spending.[2]

While the organization has been fairly unnoticed by the media, internet bloggers in states where American Majority is active have begun taking notice and alerting local communities to the organization's work. The use of online media is a focus of the organization, and the use of social networking sites along with its openness to the blog community have proven successful. Part of this online network is the Build the Majority [3] email campaign, designed to allow people to register for regular email updates and newsletters.

Programs

American Majority has four programs that support its mission as a political training institute:

  • The Candidate Training Program is geared toward people who are seeking public office, especially at the local and state levels. At one-day seminars, candidates and their staff members are taught campaign basics, beginning with how to file the proper paperwork and register as a candidate. Topics addressed include the use of social media, effective communication, volunteer coordination, and fundraising. American Majority has created manuals with state specific information about becoming a candidate and campaigning for positions on the local school board and city council. [4]
  • The Activist Training Program is focused on teaching citizens how to become community leaders by advocating American Majority's goals of increased freedom and limited government. Attendees are trained how to organize coalitions and hold successful events, how to send FOIA requests to government bodies, hold elected officials accountable, use new media to communicate their message, and volunteer for issue advocacy groups, think tanks, and political campaigns.[5]
  • Campus Majority partners with American Majority to provide activist trainings on college campuses.[6] Along with addressing many of the same topics as the Activist trainings, the Campus Majority events also include discussions about how to effectively promote limited government ideals on a college campus, and how to become involved in student government.
  • The Fellowship Program will begin in 2009 and will be focused on business and community leaders. They will learn how to use their positions in the community to “advance liberty” and have the opportunity to network with “other liberty-minded individuals.”[7]

States

Along with the Purcellville, Virginia national office, American Majority has offices in the following states:
