Analysis of bond and tax issue approval on statewide ballots

The following sections will break down bond issues that were on the ballot in 2008, 2010 and 2012, as well as tax measures that were on the ballot in those years.

Even-numbered years were chosen due to higher numbers of ballot measures being placed on the ballot in those years than odd-numbered years.

A bond issue as it applies to ballots is when a state government, or a local unit of government (city, county, school district) places a question before the voters as a ballot measure, asking them to approve or deny additional proposed spending.

Quick stats:

  • A total of 49 bond measures appeared on the ballot in 2008, 2010 and 2012.
  • In each year presented, a total of 15 bond measures were approved each year.
  • No more than 2 bond measures were defeated each year.
  • A total of 45 bond measures were approved over those years, with 4 being defeated, for an approval rate of 92%
  • A total of 25 property tax measures were on the ballot in these years, the highest of the type of tax measures.

Bond issues appeared in Alabama, Alaska, Maine, New Jersey, New Mexico and Rhode Island.
