Barreras ran in the 2012 election for New Mexico House of Representatives District 7. He defeated Michelle L. Mares and LeRoy Baca in the Democratic primary on June 5, 2012. He was defeated by Kelly K. Fajardo (R) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[1][2]

Barreras lost his bid for re-election to the 7th District Seat in 2010. He defeated Benny L. Hodges in the June 1 Democratic primary election. Barreras was defeated by David Chavez (R) in the general election on November 2, 2010.[3]
