Santabarbara is running in the 2012 election for New York State Assembly District 111. He ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on September 13, 2012. He is also running on the Working Families Party and Independence Party of New York State tickets. Thomas L. Quackenbush ran unopposed in the Republican primary; he is also running on the Conservative Party ticket. The general election takes place on November 6, 2012.

Santabarbara was a Democratic candidate for District 105 of the New York State Assembly. He was uncontested in the September 14 Democratic primary. Santabarbara was defeated by incumbent George Amedore (R) in the general election on November 2.
Santabarbara and his wife Jennifer have two children. He is the son of Italian immigrants.
