Board of education

The Anne Arundel County Public Schools are established by a nine-member Board of Education. Eight board members serve overlapping terms of five years each and are appointed by the Governor. Board members may serve two consecutive terms. The ninth member is a high school senior elected by student government representatives as their nominee to the Governor to serve a one-year term. The Board meets twice a month during the school year, on the first and third Wednesdays at the administration building on Riva Road in Annapolis. All meetings are open to the public, and citizen participation is encouraged. Board members are non-paid volunteers.[16]

The current Superintendent of schools is Kevin M. Maxwell, Ph.D.[17]

Below is a list of Board of Education Members for 2009-2010.

Teacher contracts

An agreement exists between the Anne Arundel County Board of Education and the Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County for 2006-2009[18]

School budget

The Anne Arundel County Board of Education has approved a $936.2 million Fiscal Year 2010 operating budget and $131.6 million capital budget for Fiscal Year 2010. The operating budget, approved by the Board, does not call for a reduction in force. However, it imposes furloughs on all employees except school bus drivers on a graduated scale and contains no salary increases for any employee. Included in the capital budget is funding to enclose open space classrooms and for construction projects at nine schools.[19]

Maryland measures academic progress each year by administering the Maryland School Assessment, the Alternate Maryland School Assessment (for students with disabilities), and the Maryland High School Assessments.[20]
