An Arizona Public Employee Pension Amendment may appear on a 2012 ballot in the state of Arizona as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment. The measure is expected to be proposed during 2011 state legislative session. There have been problems, according to reports, with the retirement system in the state. Lawmakers are considering sending the measure to the ballot in order to change the Arizona Constitution provision that protects benefits by stating that they "shall not be diminished or impaired."This would allow Arizona lawmakers to consider whether or not to abolish the pension system for elected officials.[1]

Path to the ballot

A majority vote is required in the Arizona State Legislature to send a constitutional amendment to the ballot. Arizona is one of ten states that allow a referred amendment to go on the ballot after a majority vote in one session of the state's legislature.
