Welcome to Arkansas on Ballotpedia!


Arkansas is a state located in the southern region of the United States. Its name is an Algonquian name of the Quapaw Indians and the 32nd most populous of the United States. The capital and most populous city is Little Rock, located in the central portion of the state. The Territory of Arkansas was admitted to the Union as the 25th state on June 15, 1836. Currently, there are two members of the U.S. Senate, a total of four Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 35 members of the Arkansas State Senate and 100 members of the Arkansas House of Representatives. As of September 2013, Arkansas is one of 13 states that is under divided government and does not have a state government trifecta.

The structure of the Arkansas judicial system is laid out in Article 7 of the state constitution. The state court system is made up of the Arkansas Supreme Court, the Arkansas Court of Appeals, the Arkansas District Courts, the Arkansas Circuit Courts and Arkansas City Courts.


The federal court system is made up of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas, United States District Court for the Western District of Arkansas, United States bankruptcy court, Eastern District of Arkansas and United States bankruptcy court, Western District of Arkansas. The district courts are part of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
