|High school||Southern Door High (1969)|
|Bachelor's||University of Wisconsin-River Falls (1977)|
|Place of birth||Southern Door County, Wisconsin|
Johnsrud grew up in Southern Door County. After graduating from Southern Door High School in 1969, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. His service spanned three years, two of which were spent in Vietnam. Upon returning from Vietnam, Johnsrud went to the University of Wisconsin on the G.I. Bill, and earned a bachelor's degree in Agriculture Education in 1977.
His resume includes working as an outside machinist for Bay Ship Building in Sturgeon Bay, and starting a dairy farm. While working as a machinist, he became a member of the Boilermakers union. For the last 19 years, Johnsrud has served as the Agriculture Instructor and FFA Advisor at Kewaunee High School for 19 years.
"The Republican controlled legislature has attacked public education. They have cut over $800 Million dollars from public schools. Public education is the key to our democracy. Without public education you have no democracy and students cannot learn to become good citizens. Education is the key to success in life. By making huge cuts to education we are setting out to jeopardize the future of our youth. We need a representative who cares about our children and will make education a priority."
- Workers’ Rights
"Workers deserve the right to collectively bargain. Republicans in the State Legislature have made it a priority to attack average workers. In one move they stripped away bargaining rights that have been in place for over 50 years. If elected to the State Assembly I would work hard to defend the rights of workers."
- Women’s Issues
"Women have been under attack in this state. This legislature repealed the Equal Pay Act which helped guarantee that women would make as much as men for equal work. This legislature has also made attacks on women’s health by cutting vital services for women."
- Open Government
"I believe government should be transparent and accountable to the people. The Republican Legislature has tried to remove transparency from government going so far as to sign petitions to refuse to discuss re-districting with the public and passing laws without allowing any public input. The State of Wisconsin was given a rating of D- for its disclosure of budgetary items. A true representative understands that people need to be able to hold government accountable."
