The attorney general provides legal services to state agencies and boards, protects consumers from fraud, assists the victims of crime and defends the state in civil proceedings.

The current occupant of the office is Stephen Six, who succeeded Paul Morrison‎ in 2008. Morrison was elected in 2006 but resigned in late 2007 in the wake of a scandal.

2010 race

A former assistant attorney general, Ralph DeZago, has announced his intention to seek the Republican nomination for Kansas Attorney General in 2010.

"DeZago cites his legal experience as his primary qualification for the position. He served as chief public defender for the Eighth Judicial District for 16 years. His jurisdiction eventually expanded to include much of north-central Kansas, including Salina, Abilene, Junction City and Manhattan." [1]
