KARE-11-ST. PAUL, MN-As election results are being certified across Minnesota and the possiblity of US Senate Candidate Al Franken pushing for a recount grows, the issue of securing ballots in Minnesota is taking prominence[1]
Different Methods Used for Keeping Ballots
As counties across Minnesota are certifying elections, the lack of a uniform standard at the statewide level for safeguarding marked ballots could come into play if a recount is levied. For example, St. Louis County keeps election ballots in the courthouse attic while Anoka County keeps them locked in the basement, and Hennepin County relies on its cities to keep ballots safe.[1]
The campaigns have been negotiating neutral standards for ballot security after an unsuccessful court challenge Saturday by Republican incumbent Norm Coleman to halt the counting of 32 absentee ballots based in Minneapolis. Coleman's campaign questioned the ballots' legitimacy, saying it was known that the ballots had been left for several days in the car[1].
The last large-scale recount of a statewide election occurred in Washington State's 2004 Governor's Race, in which the Republican candidate initially appeared to win, before losing to the Democrat after two recounts. During the recount, vote totals changed several times upon discoveries of piles of uncounted ballots in several counties[1].
