When editing code in such a large document, it's easy to type something twice, or simply to leave out an important character sometimes. What happened was you added a line saying <nowiki><ref name="the title of your reference"><ref>[http://link.com]</ref>.

Adding to Ballotpedia is exciting because it helps your neighbors learn about their elections. You could take one ballot measure and become its expert, sharing with others everything you learn.  Because it's a living archive, Ballotpedia is a move away from sound bites toward reasoned discussion and debate. Our "[[Ballotpedia:What people are saying|What people are saying]]" page is a testimony to the value readers find here.

To make things a little easier, <ref name=""> is not where you put the title of the reference. That is in case you are using the same reference for two or more different paragraphs or sections. This is how to properly add a simple reference tag:

Here are some ways you can get involved:

* Look at the [[Ballotpedia:Volunteer Program|volunteer opportunities]].

* Work on the [[Ballotpedia:Collaboration of the Month|Collaboration of the Month]].

* Choose a [[:Category:Stub articles|stub article]] and expand on it.

* Visit your state page (example: [[California]]) and expand on one of the articles listed there.

* Find a [[Ballotpedia:Portals|portal]] that interests you and start working on those articles.  Each portal has a to-do list  with suggested areas for expansion and improvement.

Related to the Michigan Stem Cell issue on the November ballot:  Toward the bottom of the page there is a section called "EXTERNAL LINKS" providing links to webpages in both support of the initiative as well as in opposition to it.  Only the the link of support for the issue works.  THE LINK TO ACCESS THE WEBSITE OPPOSING THE INITIATIVE IS AS FOLLOWS:  [[www.stemcellresearchcures.com]]   It needs to be corrected by those editing BallotPedia.org.  Currently you have an error in the link because it reads http://www.http://stemcellresearchcures.com .

Wiki-gardening refers to a variety of small article adjustments that make them easier to read or navigate, such as [[Help:Categories on Ballotpedia|adding useful category tags]]. There's '''always''' a lot of wiki-gardening to be done.

Thank you for fixing this.

Here are some areas that usually need help:
 +
* Check the [[Ballotpedia:To do list]] for general maintenance tasks.
 +
* Look at [[Special:Categories|Categories]] for red-linked categories.  Then add a link on that category page to a relevant article.
 +
* Look at [[Special:Categories|Categories]] for two categories that are basically the same, but are typographically different.  Eliminate one of the categories by putting all of its articles into the other category.
 +
* Look in [[Special:Brokenredirects|Broken re-directs]] and fix any that are broken.
 +
* Review a set of [[:Category:Ballot measures|ballot measures]] and add [[Help:List of Ballotpedia topic categories|additional topic category tags]] to the article after reviewing [[List of ballot measures by topic|this list of ballot measure topics]].  Most ballot initiatives fall into more than one category. (Read up on [[Help:Categories on Ballotpedia|how to add category tags to articles]].)

You can help Ballotpedia in two main ways:
  1. Adding content
  2. Cleaning up through "wiki-gardening"

Adding content

Adding to Ballotpedia is exciting because it helps your neighbors learn about their elections. You could take one ballot measure and become its expert, sharing with others everything you learn. Because it's a living archive, Ballotpedia is a move away from sound bites toward reasoned discussion and debate. Our "What people are saying" page is a testimony to the value readers find here.

Where to start

Here are some ways you can get involved:

What to add

What should you add once you find an interesting article?

  • References to source material
  • Historical details
  • Links within Ballotpedia to other relevant articles
  • Links to relevant external pages

Maintenance

See Ballotpedia:Maintenance

Wiki-gardening

Wiki-gardening refers to a variety of small article adjustments that make them easier to read or navigate, such as adding useful category tags. There's always a lot of wiki-gardening to be done.

Here are some areas that usually need help:
