WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Washington Post reported that Montana Senator Max Baucus will not seek re-election in 2014 and instead will retire. Baucus is currently the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. He is serving his sixth term and was first elected in 1978.[1]

As the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Baucus may now turn his attention fully to tax reform. In the beginning of April, he held a private committee meeting to discuss an overhaul of the tax code.[2]

Baucus had recently been in the news for his vote against the Manchin-Toomey amendment, which would have expanded background checks on gun purchases.[3][4]
