Turner defeated Deanna House (D) and Phillip Merletti (R) in the March 1, 2011, special election.[3] Merletti declared his candidacy as a write-in candidate after losing in the Republican caucus. Due to party rules, only 20 people participated in the caucus. Merletti argued that the caucus was not representative of the true sentiment of Republican voters. The state party chairman argued that Merletti was a fringe candidate upset about his defeat.[4]
