Bill Lockyer is the current California Treasurer. Lockyer, a Democrat, was first elected in 2006 and re-elected in November 2010.[1]

Lockyer is ineligible to run for a third consecutive term as state treasurer in 2014 due to term limits, and he plans to retire rather than seek a new elected office. His current term expires January 5, 2013, at which time Lockyer will leave politics with a perfect record, having won every election from his "1968 campaign for school board in San Leandro to a quarter-century in the Legislature and two terms each as attorney general and treasurer."[2]

Biography

Before his election to statewide office, he was a member of the San Leandro School Board. Lockyer holds a J.D. from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law, a teaching certificate from California State University-Hayward and a B.A. in political science from the University of California-Berkeley.[1]

Political career

Treasurer (2007-present)

Lockyer was first elected California's 32nd state treasurer on November 7, 2006, and re-elected on November 2, 2010. He assumed office on January 1, 2007. Lockyer's current term will end in January 2015, after which he will be prohibited from holding office again by term limits.

Attorney General of California (1999-2006)

Before becoming treasurer, Lockyer served two terms as state attorney general, from 1999 to 2007. As listed on the state treasurer's website, Lockyer's tenure as attorney general included landmark achievements such as establishing the best DNA forensic crime lab in the country, the Megan's Law website to track registered sex offenders, and led cases resulting in the successful recovery of "billions of dollars for defrauded energy ratepayers, consumers and taxpayers."[1]

California State Assembly and California State Senate (1973-1998)

Lockyear first won election to the California State Assembly in a special election on September 4, 1973. His career in the two houses of the California state legislature spanned 25 years, during which time he served as President Pro Tem of the California State Senate.

[3] Lockyer cannot run for re-election as state treasurer in 2014 because of term limits.

2010

Lockyer was re-elected on November 2, 2010. His term will end in January 2015, after which he will be prohibited from holding office again by term limits.
