Somer ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing New Jersey's 5th District.A[2] She lost to incumbent Scott Garrett in the June 5 Republican primary.[3]

While Somer was a long-shot for the Republican nod over incumbent Garrett, she said, "And if you want to just keep re-electing the same people to office and expect to get any changes, you’re wrong.[1][4]
