Gehring has his Bachelor's degree from The University of Cincinnati, his Master's from Xavier University and certificates from George Washington University, Yale and UCLA. Gehring is the former vice president of Children’s Hospital and is the former CEO of Ohio Shared Information Services. Gehring was previously on the board, from 2006 to 2009, serving as president of the board in 2007.
Gehring faced three incumbents and three challengers in the general election on November 5, 2013.

Three seats were up for election on the Northwest Local School Board on November 5, 2013. All three incumbents filed for re-election.
About the district
In terms of graduation rate and average household income, Hamilton County overperformed in these areas. The graduation rate was 87.9% compared to 87.8% statewide. The average household income was $49,218 compared to $48,071 in the entire state. In terms of the poverty rate, Hamilton County underperformed with 15.9%, while the poverty rate for Ohio was 14.8%.
