Campaign themes

In a 2013 interview with the Courier Post, Gehring stated the following when asked about his campaign priorities:[1]

How can the district meet its budget challenges?
Gehring says the challenges can be met with open and honest interaction of the community. “The answer is not more tax income, it involves working within our resources, reducing expenses, and streamlining operational procedures,” he said.

The district has a five-year emergency levy that raises about $7 million annually. If elected, will you support its renewal?
He says the board must consider the needs of the district and the needs of the community and he says the community’s hurting. He said he would like to see the levy not be renewed. He cannot commit to that, but he would look to reduce or eliminate it.

What do you think are the biggest challenges facing the district in the next four years?
Challenges include the budget, middle school academic performance and lack of diversity on the board. He says the budget needs review and the district needs to get realistic with it can afford. He says middle school academic performance must improve and the district should strengthen the curriculum where necessary to improve performance.
