Welcome to California on Ballotpedia!


Bordering the Pacific Ocean, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico, California is located on the West Coast of the United States. The state's capital is Sacramento.

California is governed as a republic, with three branches of government – the executive branch consisting of the Governor and the other independently elected constitutional officers; the legislative branch consisting of the California State Assembly and California State Senate; and the judicial branch consisting of the Supreme Court of California and lower courts. California has two members of the U.S. Senate, a total of 53 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 40 members of the California State Senate and 80 members of the California State Assembly.

The structure of the California judicial system is laid out in Article 6 of the state constitution. There are three levels of the state courts: the California Supreme Court, the California Court of Appeal and the California Superior Courts.


On the federal level, there are four courts: the United States District Court for the Central District of California, United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, United States District Court for the Northern District of California and United States District Court for the Southern District of California. Appeals are made at the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
