Bordering the Pacific Ocean, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico, California is located on the west coast of the United States. The state's capital is Sacramento and is governed as a republic, with three branches of government – the executive branch consisting of the Governor and the other independently elected constitutional officers; the legislative branch consisting of the California State Assembly and California State Senate; and the judicial branch consisting of the Supreme Court of California and lower courts of California. Currently, there are two Democratic members of the U.S. Senate, a total of 53 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 40 members of the California State Senate and 80 members of the California State Assembly. As of September 2013, California is one of 13 Democratic state government trifectas.
