California has a top-two primary system, in which the top two vote-getters, regardless of party, go on to the general election.
Heading into the election the incumbent is Doug LaMalfa (R), who was first elected in 2012.
California's 1st Congressional District is located in the northern portion of the state and includes the counties of Siskiyou, Modoc, Shasta, Lassen, Tehama, Butte, Plumas, Sierra and Nevada and parts of Glenn County.
