California 2011 ballot propositions
Jerry Brown, the Governor of California, suggested in January 2011 that he would ask the California State Legislature to refer one or more ballot questions to a statewide ballot in 2011 that would pose for the state's voters a series of taxation and spending proposals. This, however, did not come to pass.
If the state's legislature had referred a plan to the ballot, the most likely month for the election was said to be June 2011. However, the deadline for a referred measure to go on the June 7, 2011 ballot passed without an agreement and eventually the deadline for referring a measure to the November 8, 2011 ballot slipped past as well.
The cost of holding the special election was estimated at $70 million. Such costs are born by California's counties. Sam Blakeslee introduced a bill to require the state to reimburse counties when the state mandates special elections.
