California GOP wants investigation of voting by mentally disabled

The California Republican Party has called for an investigation into whether mentally disabled residents of an adult care center voted under the improper influence of the center's director. David Simerley of the Thumbs Up! center said that he and residents of his facility registered to vote, went over their ballots together and voted. The father of one of the developmentally disabled voters said that his son has the mental capacity of a 5-year-old and could not have made an informed decision. In a generally Republican area nearly all of the people Simerley helped to vote cast ballots for the Democrat, Barack Obama.[1]
California secretary of state has no comment
The office of California Secretary of State Debra Bowen declined to confirm or deny an investigation into the California GOP's allegations. A statement said that investigations remain confidential unless there is enough evidence to bring formal charges. Simerley defended his actions as non-partisan, pointing out that the residents of the Thumbs Up! center visited the local headquarters of both the Republican and Democratic parties.[1]
