Candidate too late says South Dakota Secretary of State
PIERRE, South Dakota: On April 18, South Dakota Secretary of State Jason Gant said that Stephanie Strong can no longer be added to the state ballot. Earlier this year, Strong filed a candidate petition in order to challenge Kristi Noem in the Republican congressional primary. However, upon review, Gant ruled 100 of Strong's signatures invalid, placing her below the required number.
Strong was removed from the ballot but ultimately challenged Gant's ruling in court--a challenge that Gant maintains has come too late. Absentee ballots for the election have already been printed. Despite the Secretary's concerns, Strong seem intent on pursuing her legal appeal. She has requested a hearing on May 1 to consider the case.
