Carl Redus, Glen Brown and George Stepps recall, Pine Bluff, Arkansas (2010)

An effort to recall Carl Redus, Glen Brown and George Stepps from their positions in city government in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, is underway began in May 2010 but was abandoned in August 2010 when recall organizers said they had come up about 1,000 signatures short of the number required to force a recall election.

Carl Redus is the Mayor of Pine Bluff, while Brown and Stepps are members of the town's city council.

The Pine Bluff Coalition of Concerned Citizens led the recall effort. The group was angry with Redus for firing former Police Chief John Howell. They also believed that the city was falling into the economic doldrums under the mayor's leadership.

Brown and Stepps were targeted for recall because they voted to uphold the mayor's firing of Howell. Alderwoman Thelma Walker also voted to uphold the firing, but she was not targeted in the recall since her term was up in November 2010.

Former police chief John Howell, whose dismissal is at the heart of the recall, filed a federal discrimination and wrongful dismissal lawsuit.

Path to the ballot

Recall supporters needed to obtain the signatures of 8,206 verified registered voters to force a recall vote.

In early May 2010, the group said that it had collected about 5,700 signatures. The deadline for collecting all the needed signatures is August 23, 2009.

In July, recall organizers called on volunteers to re-double their efforts to collect signatures.
