A Carmel-By-the-Sea, Measure I regarding the Flanders Mansion Property ballot proposition was on the November 3, 2009 ballot in Monterey County for voters in the City of Carmel-By-The-Sea, where it was approved.

Shall discontinuance and abandonment of the Flanders Mansion Property (APN 010-061-005) as public parkland, and authorization to sell the Flanders Mansion Property "with Conservation Easements and Mitigation" as passed on May 12, 2009 by the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea City Council by Resolutions No. 2009-30 through 2009-33, be approved?"

Voters who wish to vote by mail have until October 27 to do so; otherwise, voters can go to the polls on November 3.[1]

The sale of Flanders Mansion

Flanders Mansion is a National Register Property located in the Mission Trail Nature Preserve. The city council of Carmel-By-The-Sea voted in December 1999 to sell the property. The "Flanders Foundation" was formed to resist the sale. The Flanders Foundation has filed a variety of lawsuits against the city since 2005 to prevent the sale of the property, costing the town over $800,000 in legal fees.[2]

The city originally purchased the 15+ acre Flanders property, including the Mansion, in 1972 for $275,000. The mansion was built by the Flanders family in 1920.
