Carmelo G. Garcia is a Democratic member of the New Jersey General Assembly, representing District 33. He was first elected to the chamber in 2013.[1]


Garcia earned his B.A. from Seton Hall University and his master’s degree in Management and Information Systems from Stevens Institute of Technology. His professional experience includes working as the Executive Director of the Hoboken Housing Authority since 2007, as a licensed mortgage banker, as a legislative aide for the County of Hudson Board of Chosen Freeholders and Chief of Staff for the County of Hudson Board of Chosen Freeholders from 1999-2011.[2]

Garcia won election in the 2013 election for New Jersey General Assembly District 33. Garcia was bracketed with Raj Mukherji and defeated John Hilt IV, Anthony Mills and Peter Basso in the June 4 Democratic primary. He and Raj Mukherji (D) defeated Jude Anthony Tiscornia (R) and Armando Hernandez (R) in the general election, which took place on November 5, 2013.[4][5][6][7]

Garcia was disqualified before the primary by Assignment Judge Peter Bariso for leading an agency that receives federal funds. Garcia appealed the ruling and it was overturned by an appellate court, placing Garcia back on the ballot.[8]
