Christianburg Council Election Referendum (November 2009)
There will be a Christianburg Council Election Referendum on the November 3 ballot in Montgomery County.
This Referendum seeks to change the date of town council elections. It is currently set in May, but the referendum would change that to November, making it so city elections coincide with county and state elections as well. The town currently has to fund their own election in May, but if they move it to November the county pays for it and would ave the town on average $5,000 per election. Proponents say it would help local voters to understand more of what was being voted on, opponents say that it would create partisan votes for local offices because they would coincide with state elections. Municipalities are able to choose their own election date and over 200 in the state hold their elections in May.
