Mast was raised in Wisconsin. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Marquette University with a BS in Accounting. She received her CPA in 1995. Mast has two children in elementary school and is a volunteer in Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. 
Mast ran for the District 1 seat on the school board on November 5, 2013 against incumbent Rhonda Lennon.
Mast lost the general election on November 5, 2013.

The district 1 seat was at stake as well as the financial security of the district. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools experienced budget difficulties in recent years and the board had recently developed a school bond plan to reopen and expand current schools after closing some in 2010.
