Smith was born in Atchison, Kansas in 1951 and moved to Southeast Kansas in 1970 after enrolling at Pittsburg State University. He earned his B.S. in Mathematics, his M.A. in physical education and his Ed.S. in administration from Pittsburg State University.
Smith played football and baseball at Pittsburg State University between 1970 and 1973, before going on to enjoy a decorated career as athletic director and head football coach at St. Mary’s-Colgan High School in Pittsburg.
Smith has been active in his community from landscaping and volunteerism to active membership with the Knights of Columbus, Kansas Coaches Association and board membership with the Kansas Teachers Community Credit Union.
