Chuck Smith was a 2014 Republican candidate for District 3 of the Kansas House of Representatives.[1]


Smith was born in Atchison, Kansas in 1951 and moved to Southeast Kansas in 1970 after enrolling at Pittsburg State University. He earned his B.S. in Mathematics, his M.A. in physical education and his Ed.S. in administration from Pittsburg State University.[2]

Smith played football and baseball at Pittsburg State University between 1970 and 1973, before going on to enjoy a decorated career as athletic director and head football coach at St. Mary’s-Colgan High School in Pittsburg.[3]

Smith has been active in his community from landscaping and volunteerism to active membership with the Knights of Columbus, Kansas Coaches Association and board membership with the Kansas Teachers Community Credit Union.[2]

Elections for the office of Kansas House of Representatives took place in 2014. A primary election was held on August 5, 2014, and a general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature-filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 2, 2014. Incumbent Julie Menghini was unopposed in the Democratic primary. Chuck Smith was unopposed in the Republican primary. Menghini was defeated by Smith in the general election.[4][5]

Smith is married to Pittsburg native Beth Wachter. Together they have seven children and ten grandchildren.[2]
