This is a list of cities in Virginia, as of the 2010 Census.

Virginia allows municipal charter cities and counties. There are 95 total counties in Virginia. Of those 95:[1]

There are 229 total municipalities in Virginia. All 229 are Charter/Home rule cities -- there are no general law municipalities in Virginia.[1]

Types of local government

Virginia has two primary types of local government:

  • Cities.
  • Counties.

The U.S. Census Bureau's 2012 study of local governments[2] shows that, as of September of 2012, Virginia had:

  • 95 counties, of which 3 have charters.
  • 229 cities, all of which are charter cities.
