A City of Anderson Sales Tax, Measure A ballot question was on the June 3, 2014 election ballot for voters in the city of Anderson in Shasta County, California, where it was narrowly approved.

Measure A authorized the city of Anderson to impose a sales tax increase of 1/2 percent. The city council decided to make this tax increase a general purpose tax, which meant the revenue was designed to go into the general budget. This allowed Measure A to narrowly pass with a simple majority, instead of requiring a 2/3rds supermajority vote.[1]

City officials estimated that the Measure A tax would bring in about a million dollars per year in additional revenue to the city.[1]

After preliminary counts on election night, Measure A trailed by eight votes. With the next update, however, it pulled ahead.[1]

The city also put an advisory question, Measure B, on the ballot asking voters if they approved of spending at least half of the revenue from the new tax on police protection services. Officials proposed that the remainder be used for park maintenance and graffiti abatement. This approach, in which the city puts a majority-vote, general tax measure on the ballot, specifying its use with an advisory question, was also taken by the city of Woodland in Yolo County.[1]
