City of Fresno Mid Valley Disposal franchise grant, Measure G (June 2013)
Measure G sought to grant exclusive franchise to the Mid Valley Disposal, privatizing residential garbage collection. This measure would have eliminated about 120 city jobs and was estimated to raise about $14 million in private garbage contractor fees over several years.
- These results are from the Fresno County elections office.
Measure G was pushed by the Mayor, Ashely Swearengin, and the City Manager, Mark Scott.
Swearengin filed an argument in favor of Measure G in which she said that the measure will keep trash service the same and lower trash bills by as much as 17.6%, while helping the city balance its budget. Scott expressed his opinion that outsourcing garbage collection is essential to the effort to meet financial obligations and avoid bankruptcy in Fresno, which was facing a projected $1.2 million deficit at the time of Measure G.
- Blong Xiong, President of Fresno City Council
- Oliver Baines, Council Member
- Sal Quintero, Council Member
- Susan Anderson, former Fresno County Supervisor
- Susan Good, small business owner
Blong Xiong, Oliver Baines, Sal Quintero, Susan Andersan and Susan Good joined the Fresno City unions in strongly opposing this measure. These people jointly filed arguments in opposition to this measure, in which they said that the current trash service is efficient and well run, imploring the voters to follow the principle of "if it ain't broke don't fix it." They also pointed out that lawsuits have already been filed against this measure and that Measure G is likely to trigger expensive court cases and could even be found illegal.
